11/20/2002 - Cypress Semiconductor, a world
leader in physical-layer (PHY) devices, and CMI,
a leader in broadband video delivery technologies, announced
a strategic partnership to offer complete DVB/ASI and SMPTE-259M
video output solutions to video equipment manufacturers for
use in routers, aggregators and other video networking equipment.
Increased services, including video on demand and internet
over cable, require increased bandwidth and intelligence across
traditional cable equipment networks. This increased demand
puts greater engineering and time-to-market demands on the
equipment developers. Combining Cypress’s proven high-speed
serial PHYs with CMI’s extensive video solutions will accelerate
customer design cycles and significantly reduce their time-to-market.
“Vendors who can provide a complete, industry-standard, physical-layer
solution allow customers to be more competitive,” said Paul
Scott, vice president of Product Planning at Cypress. “This
is why we teamed with an established digital-video company
such as CMI. The partnership enables our mutual
customers to free up their engineering talent to work on providing
differentiated features and value to their end customers.”
“Cypress has a proven record in providing quality physical-layer
devices to the video industry,” said Les Zoltan, vice president
of CMI. “Their original HOTLink® (High-speed
Optical Transceiver Link) and HOTLink DXTM devices have been
highly successful. Their new HOTLink IITM device integrates
even more features and provides greater port density than
ever before. When looking for a PHY vendor to partner with,
Cypress was the natural choice.”
Cypress’s HOTLink product line has a long history of success.
Launched in 1993, today this portfolio expanded to HOTLink,
HOTLink DX, HOTLink II, and Programmable HOTLink II w/programmable
serial interface (PSITM) transceiver families that support
data transmission rates from 50 Mbps up to 1.5 Gbps. These
flexible devices are ideal for any high-speed serializer/deserializer
functions including standards such as SMPTE, HDTV, DVB/ASI,
Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Enterprise System Connection
(ESCON) as well as proprietary backplanes.
CMI focuses exclusively on DVB ASI, ATSC, MPEG-2,
SMPTE 259M, and other digital video transmission technologies.
It partnered with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the
first set-top box trials in Orlando using its DSL technology
for the cable television market. Over the last three years,
CMI has leveraged that experience to emerge as
a worldwide leader in all types of interfaces for digital
television.
